What Is an NFC Business Card and How Does It Work?

QLEM black metal NFC business card

Paper visiting cards get lost, go out of date and end up in a drawer. An NFC business card fixes all three. With one tap on a phone, it shares your contact details, WhatsApp, social links, website and more, and you can update it anytime without reprinting.

Here's a simple guide to how it works and whether it's right for you.

What does NFC mean?

NFC stands for Near Field Communication. It's the same short-range wireless technology used for tap-to-pay with contactless debit and credit cards. A tiny NFC chip sits inside the card. When someone holds their phone close to it, the phone reads a link stored on the chip and opens it instantly.

The chip doesn't need a battery or charging. The phone powers it for the split second it takes to read.

What happens when someone taps your card?

  1. They hold the top of their phone near your card.
  2. A notification pops up with your profile link.
  3. They tap it, and your digital profile opens in their browser.
  4. From there, they can save your contact in one tap, message you on WhatsApp, visit your Instagram or LinkedIn, open your website, or download your brochure.

The other person doesn't need any app. That's what makes NFC cards so easy to use at meetings, events and shop counters.

Does it work with every phone?

Most modern Android phones and iPhones can read NFC cards.

  • Android: NFC needs to be switched on (usually in quick settings). On most phones it already is.
  • iPhone: Newer iPhones read NFC automatically when the screen is on and unlocked.

For phones that can't read NFC, every QLEM card also has a QR code on the back. They simply scan it with the camera, and the same profile opens.
